Retail Uninterrupted - Recession Rescue

Pretty much every morning I watch Good Morning America. Yup, I for-go the serious news shows for something a bit more light. Truth is I believe that the negative story lines make for a poor attitude. Not that Good Morning America doesn't offer plenty. But I digress...

Good Morning America regularly has a segment called Recession Rescue. It's probably more like every day than regularly but you get the point. Sometimes they talk about how to use coupons at the grocery to save money, one day; they actually covered how to shop high-end retail stores without paying full price...just what we need.

My philosophy is simple...be the place that your customer can go to get away from the negative. I like to have in-store events but that's not the only way. Those of you who began tightening your belts when the news started going south: do you have product for those who are still interested in shopping? Will you still have product in fourth quarter (when many experts say we will see improvements due to the election)? Did you see the new offerings at market or did you stay home?

We have committed, in our store, to ambitious sales goals for 2008. We've committed to maintaining a healthy product level. We've committed to offering new items. We've committed to having store events each month. What have you committed to? Only selling the tried and true best sellers, playing "A Coat of Many Colors" on the stereo (don't laugh, I actually heard it in a showroom in Atlanta)? Gosh, that was such a sad place too.

Independent retailers have the best opportunity at their feet. We have the ability to make each customer feel special. We have the opportunity to provide refuge for the customers who are being bombarded by negative news. If you ever wanted to be powerful, you have it!

Each day, I feel blessed by the fact that my customers have a vested interest in my success. The tightened economy has actually endeared these customers to me - more so than before. There have been many "Shop Local" campaigns over the years...the most successful so far has been the rising gas prices. Don't whine...embrace your opportunity as an independent to provide your customer with some refuge, a glass of wine and a smile.

For us, it's a W.I.N.O.S (women in need of sanity) party on September 16th. We'll be serving up discounts on spa products, giggling at the trinkets that carry the logo and yes, enjoying a bit of liquid sanity. Oh yes, and it'll be in my store with the registers ringing. So make the most of the opportunities before you and let this recession rescue your fourth quarter.

Yes! Melissa, I heartily agree with you and am SO glad you are sharing your wonderful attitude with others. There is far too much woe, doom, and gloom out there. Yes, of course we need to be aware of what is happening in our industry and our nation, but we also need to remember that isn't the whole story. We are the ones on the front lines - we are the ones who open the door every morning, greet our customers, talk with our suppliers, and keep the cash flow moving. Last holiday season, when the news reported for weeks that sales were down, they were talking about surveys of department stores and big boxes - NOT small boutiques. We all knew that the reality was that OUR customers were still spending, still shopping, still looking for beautiful gifts and decor. Whether online or in B&M stores, small retailers were doing fine.

Independent business is the backbone of America, and we have the opportunity right now to make a very positive difference in our communities and our nation. I am sick to death of negative forecasts and attitudes, and think your post really hits the mark. Come on, everyone - let's all get in line behind Melissa and join the Positivity Parade!!! It all starts with a great attitude...

Melissa, I've always felt that doom & gloom is a self-fulfilling prophecy. A business can not thrive when it's owner is moaning and groaning about how bad the economy is. Yes these are touch financial times but people will still shop and it's up to each of us who own a store to make sure people shop with US! I love the idea of your W.I.N.O.S event - not only have you provided an evening of relaxation and enjoyment for your customers, but your event gave people something positive to talk about and that is terrific word of mouth advertising for your store!

On a side note, I want to let you know how much I have enjoyed your video series "Visual Merchandising 101" Your sophisticated, professional, and fun display techniques are both refreshing and inspiring. Thanks for the great display and merchandising tips you have shared - I hope the Gift and Home Channel will be expanding your video series, you have a lot to offer!

Results from the WINOS partyI wanted to let all of you know that our WINOS party was a huge success! What was interesting for this ladies night, compared to others that we have done, is that the ladies came early and s-t-a-y-e-d! The one husband that accompanied his wife had a sheer look of terror on his face, however! (We're blessed to have a lot of male shoppers come to our store.) All of my wine glasses were out on the floor and we had to revert to the plastic back-ups. The cash register was ringing and the energy in the room was terrific. I was once again convinced that these ladies wanted a reason to shop and the choice of a post back-to-school party was a real success.

Contact W.I.N.O.S.I woke in the middle of the night and realized that I've never provided the contact information for WINOS, should you like to have a party in your store. We purchased cookbooks, aprons (the hit) and magnets (gift with purchase) that all supported the WINOS theme. They're products are great fun and they are careful to meet your timeline to be sure the products are in hand for your party. They do not allow use of their logo for your invitations which is too bad but you'll easily get past that. Contact Debbie Triplett at WINOS: toll free 888-488-9466.
