Your Health & Wellbeing
The Summer Shows are upon us. It’s hard to be all things to everyone, when you are running short on time and probably fuel too…but don’t neglect your diet. Yes, I know, easier said than done, right?
It’s tough to eat well, when you are running from one Market to the next, working on maintaining your store, developing customer relationships. Rather than jumping for that bag of chips, can of soda, glazed doughnut, focus on fruit!
After the initial rush you get from these processed sugary treats, our body's insulin response kicks in, causing a sudden drop in our blood-sugar that triggers the release of those crazy things called stress hormones. Soon you're feeling worse than you did before you ingested that sugary dessert.
Instead, reach for these nutritious options: Eat your blueberries. Instead of reaching for that bag of cookies, grab some blueberries. Blueberries are not only a fantastic antioxidant, but they have also been proven to preserve our vision. You see, blueberry extract is high in compounds called anthocyanosides that have been found to slow down visual loss.
The carbs in berries turn to sugar very slowly, so you won't have that major blood-sugar crash you get after eating that piece of cake that you have had your eye on all morning long. BIG Bonus: They're a good source of vitamin C, which helps fight the increase in our cortisol levels, a common stress hormone. Another favorite of mine, freeze some seedless grapes, they taste great and enliven your taste buds with their cold, ripe texture.
The Payoff: Not only do they taste great, they are very low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. They are also a very good source of Vitamin C and Vitamin K.
Grab some nuts! Just an ounce of mixed nuts will do the trick. Walnuts help replace those stress-depleted B vitamins, Brazil nuts give you a nice boost in zinc, which also gets drained when we are stressed, while almonds boost your Vitamin E levels, which help fight cellular damage linked to chronic stress.
Tip: Buy nuts in the shell, having to crack them open will help you pace yourself, as well as release some of that built up tension.
Remember, the act of eating is life-giving, eating right will bring more energy to you and allow you to accomplish much more in your daily life.
Good Eating!
