There are so many choices out there when it comes to green alternatives.  From the canvas shopping bags to hybrid cars, there’s now even a term for those employed within the environmental sector called green collar workers.

If you’re looking to make a difference, but don’t know where to start...here are a few simple ways to start your green adventure!

Go for the Organic
Organic foods are something to consider, as they come free of all those pesky pesticides.  Be prepared, as you may pay as much as 100% more for organic meat and dairy, but if you’re a big meat eater or milk drinker, it may be worth serious consideration.

Tip: Look at the stickers on food: A five-digit number starting with nine means it’s organic; a four-digit number means it’s conventionally grown...aim for the nine as much as you can!

Buy local produce                                                                                                             Produce that is bought locally is not only fresher, but it’s also greener. Being that it has to travel a less distance to get to your kitchen table, means it’s going to be that much fresher when you bite into that juicy apple.  Visit your local farmers market for the latest seasonal variety of fresh fruit and veggies!

Skip the Packaging
Resist buying prepared foods, look for those sold in larger quantities instead, as you will be handling less packaging.  Keep this in mind when you are buying beverages: opt for liters over cans, carry a water bottle with you instead of purchasing those little plastic bottles when you are on the go.

Summer Treats                                                                                                              It’s Summertime, a time to enjoy the fruits and veggies of the season.  It’s a lot easier to incorporate more fruits and veggies in your diet in the Summer, as the season’s best are on display at your local farmer’s market.  No need to fire up the stove or oven, enjoy a fruit salad or make that amazing Waldorf salad you’ve been jonesing for.  So many fruits to choose from: mangos, papayas, guavas and let’s not forget everyone’s favorite...watermelon!

Now back to those shopping bags. Opt for canvas over plastic...it’s a no-brainer.
