Re: "Hope You Don't Mind"

Hello Everyone,

I know everyone must be busy as bees gearing up for the Holiday Season with all the decorating and promotion planning.  But I hope you have time to read this post, as it is my first true Letter to the Editor that I would like to respond to and share.

Recently I received an email from a very nice member of the GHC Community who wrote in to me regarding our videos.  Here is an excerpt from the users note:

"Perhaps it's my NYC mania that time is precious but I do note that a number of the videos open with informal chit chat, which is certainly necessary to introduce the people and premise but after a minute, nothing of import seems to be conveyed. I used the Antique Chicks out of the Pacific Northwest as an example.

To watch several videos of 5 minutes or so is a quarter of an hour. One thus needs to walk away with concrete info, or at least I think information that breaks through the clutter---that's what helps.

...

I do appreciate all the work that goes into your information sharing. Many thanks for that fine effort. And for all that you do. Wishing you great success, too."

Now, I have to say, I loved this email.  And so did the rest of the GHC team.  You might look at this email and think differently, but we were THRILLED to obtain this kind of honest feedback.  We are also thrilled that someone took the time to write in and give us some pointers on what isn't working for them, how we can improve, and in general a  fresh perspective!

It is so refreshing hearing from our users and I do invite more of this same type of correspondence.  Now, to respond to this note, I reached out to this user and first off thanked her for their time and their commitment to the Channel.  Then I addressed some of her concerns.  We are always working on tweaking our content and the approach.  (Which hopefully you can see with our new theme music and intro editing that we have applied to some of the segments, any thoughts on that, please comment below).

We are also continually working on our website and working on design aspects, as well as better ways to serve you, the independent retailer, in a quicker fashion.  Where you can receive hard hitting information that can help your bottom line in under 3 clicks or less and within a few minutes spent with the Channel.  Remember, our goal is that you'll Start Your Day with the GHC!

I also mentioned to this user, that I had sent her message on to the rest of the team and that everyone was taking her comments into consideration, were appreciative of her honesty and her time.  One of the people on our team I shared this with was our Executive Producer Brittany Lund.  She is now going to start a regular blog here on the Channel to communicate directly to you!  She wants your feedback on the videos, she wants to tell you what she's dreaming up next for new content, and most importantly she just wants to get to know you more!

I hope you can see what an impact you can have here on the Channel.  Write us, comment below, email me personally, tell us what you think and who knows, you might just change the face of the Channel just like this user.  Want new music?  Want a segment on Pets?  Want different contests and prizes?  Want to hear from different experts or need more tradeshow coverage?  Well, all you have to do is write us to get your thoughts heard!  As you can see with the letter above, we have taken action and will continue to do so!

And not to be too cliché during this election season, but if you want change, you have to get out there and vote!  Or in this case write.  So, keep those letters coming!

Until Next time...

Happy Blogging,

Jessica

Farm Chicks VideosI agree with you that it's always great to hear feedback, Jessica. Since the example the viewer used was one of my videos, I thought I'd respond to one of her (?) points.

The letter from the viewer said that 'after a few minutes, nothing of import seemed to be conveyed'. Really? The Farm Chicks Antique Show interview with Teri & Serena provided soundbytes of information on several topics that are - or should be - very relevant to retailers today:

How a small idea can turn into a big business
How the products you sell and the vendors you feature help to build your own brand image
How sourcing products from unusual suppliers can reap huge rewards
How presenting your products in a unique way can express your brand image
How leveraging your brand by creating licensed products helps build your business recognition

All of these subjects, covered in one short five minute segment - wow, to me, that's pretty amazing!

It was GHC Producer Brittany Lund's idea to broach several subjects in the segment - through the questions that I asked the Farm Chicks and the items that we focused on in their booth. It was brilliant! In five minutes, viewers get five examples of how to focus on building their brand in five simple ways. That is a powerhouse of import and relevance in my book. Granted, these subjects are not covered in depth - but then, it is a five minute segment. It's meant to present a new viewpoint, offer inspiration, get you out of your current mindset and seeing a perspective that perhaps you've never considered. Then you can take it from there!
