As Gas Prices rise, GREEN product price points get closer to their less eco-friendly competitors
August 14, 2008 at 12:35PM
The question posed by the Wall Street Journal last month was a good one, "Does it finally pay to go Green?" In an article called, GREEN Products Gain From New Price Equation we learn that due to the increased price of gas, GREEN products are approaching the same price points of their once cheaper non-eco-friendly competitors. With the price of gas increasing daily, other products are greatly affected by this. With increased gas prices come increased shipping costs etc. Most Eco-friendly products and manufacturers use less fossil fuel that their non eco-friendly counterparts and thus their product price points are not as affected. This trend is also opening the eyes of some manufacturers who have never gone Green, and now are seeing the financial benefits. Although we sure wish they would have seen the environmental benefits and jumped on the band wagon a few years ago, we can't complain and are happy at least their bottom line has made them venture into more eco-friendly processes. According to the Wall Street Journal article, Jeff Mendelsohn, founder and CEO of New Leaf Paper LLC states that, "We try to leverage situations like this to grow into new markets...Where there's instability in prices, buyers tend to be more open to new sourcing, and that's a general market strategy, not just green." So we had to ask our retailers, are you more open to carrying eco-friendly products in your store now that the price points between eco and non-eco friendly products as lessened? Does this even factor into your buying decisions? With so many retailers going GREEN recently with at least a few products in their merchandising mix, we are excited to see from this article that this behavior will continue to grow. Don't get us wrong, we drive cars too, and are by no means hoping gas continues to climb at its exponential rate; but, we do like to see more and more manufacturers creating eco-friendly products, as well as more and more retailers being able to purchase green products for their store. ![]() Add Comment You must be a registered user to add comments.
